The Club was formed on 31st August 1897. The Honorary President was Professor Fergus D.H. Macdowall of Gathland.
Originally, ten professional gentlemen gathered in a meeting on the 31st August 1897, with the intention of forming a golf club in the village. They reconvened a month later on the 29th September, adding one to their number, at which meeting the Club was named. These eleven had played with others since 1894, in the fields about Linthills. Their “course” was four “holes” marked out with stakes and using plant pots as cups. There were no prepared fairways or greens.
1897 was considered the very zenith of the British Empire. Queen Victoria celebrated her Diamond Jubilee in June of that year. Conditions of labour an life generally in Britain had improved beyond recognition and Lochwinnoch was a mircoscosm of that British industry. The Golf Club grew year after year.
The Second World War had an immediate effect on the Club’s membership numbers. The entire membership almost halved by 1940. In Season 1943, only 8 gents and one lady paid the special flat rate fee of five shillings (25p). By the late 50’s the second golf boom arrived, employment and production grew as did Lochwinnoch Golf Club.
In 1997 we celebrated our Centenary Year with ten ex-Captains attending a flag raising ceremony to herald the Centenary year. 117 years on and Lochwinnoch Golf Club are proud to be one of the most well known clubs and top rated courses in the Renfrewshire area.
